The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. Work in a para-professional capacity involving the various legal service areas within the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), including, but not limited to Federal Personnel and Labor Law, Federal Tort Claims, Research, Ethics, Loan Guaranty, Medical Care Cost Recovery, Contracts and Procurement, Fiduciary and Guardianship, Pension and Disability, Privacy and Release of Information, and Appellate Litigation Serve in a confidential capacity to OGC attorneys and supervisors who are significantly involved in ER/LR representation Perform administrative and legal support to colleagues and supervisors on assigned work Provide direct legal services on case and/or program assignments Obtain, analyze, develop and apply relevant facts and law to assigned work Deliver quality and effective legal services by following established instructions, checklists, or standard practices Participate in reviewing case materials to become familiar with the relevant issues Assist Senior Specialists in conducting reoccurring legal and factual research and writing, as assigned, utilizing all applicable legal research tools available Prioritize assigned cases and program duties, in accordance with established deadlines and guidance provided by attorneys and/or supervisors Receive on-the-job training in the principles, procedures and techniques of the Department of Veterans Affairs Paralegal occupation Promotion Potential:
The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled. Basic Requirements:
To qualify for a Pathways Internship as a GS-05, students must have completed 4 years above high school (120 credit hours or a bachelor's degree). To qualify for a Pathways Internship as a GS-07, students must have completed 1 full academic year of graduate level education; or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree. Note:
One full academic year of undergraduate; graduate; vocational; trades; technical or high school education is the number of credit hours determined by the college, university or school to represent 1 year of full-time study. The high school curriculum must be approved by a State or local governing body. All education beyond high school must be accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Superior Academic Achievement Provisions include the below:
A Bachelor's degree in any field, plus at least one of the following superior academic achievement provisions:
1. A grade-point average (GPA) of B (3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale) for all completed undergraduate courses, or courses completed in the last two years of undergraduate curriculum; -or- 2. A grade-point average (GPA) of B
(3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale) for the required courses in your major field of study, or required courses in your major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study; -or- 3. Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university, or major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study; -or- 4. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society, other than freshman honor societies. Honor societies that have been approved are listed in the American College of Honor Societies. Booklet of Information (1992-95) and/or Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities (1991). Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note:
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Experience:
Previous education and/or experience may be evaluated to determine the highest-grade level for which the individual is qualified. Conversion Interns may be non-competitively converted to a term, career-conditional or career appointment within 120 days following successful completion of all of their educational and work experience requirements in accordance with 5 CFR 362.204. Physical Requirements:
The work is predominantly sedentary, requiring some walking, standing, bending, lifting and carrying light to moderate weight and size items such as books, files and paper.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
