USGS - Post Doctoral Research Fellowship Program - Research Geologist (PhD-DC)

USGS Post-Doctorial Fellowship - Research Opportunity Research Geologist The SPCMSC (St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center) conducts original research on problems relating to climate variability and geologic processes, supports the natural hazard and climate change missions within the USGS and addresses understanding of vulnerabilities and changes associated with extreme storms, chronic erosion, sediment mobility and transport, and climate-change driven response that includes consideration of sea-level rise and future storminess. The SPCMSC is seeking post-doctorial research proposals that can interpret the environmental history of coastal and marine (e.g., marsh, estuary, shelf, and slope) environments of the Western Atlantic during the Cenozoic. Proposals should focus on past variation in climate, environments, ocean circulation, and physical parameters such as sea-level fluctuations. Proposals should include a description of how focused research sites will be selected and what geologic archives and/or data will need to be collected. Candidates are encouraged to contact St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center researchers to inquire about existing sample and data archives (including, but not limited to, the coral reef core archive and the Gulf of Mexico Sediment Trap archive). The proposal should reflect considerable expertise in paleoenvironmental reconstruction using cutting-edge coastal and marine proxies (e.g., microfossils, sediment geochemistry, or coral geochemistry) and should clearly identify the analytical techniques needed for the proposed research. Candidates are encouraged to leverage existing collaborations in the field to augment available in-house capabilities. A successful proposal is expected to use robust statistical analyses and geochronology in order to place their results in a broader spatial and temporal context to address questions central to the understanding of forcing mechanisms and impacts of natural environmental variability in the Western Atlantic during the Cenozoic. Proposed Duty Station:
St. Petersburg, FL Areas of Ph.D.:
Including but not limited to:
Planetary Geology, Geophysics, Oceanography, Physical Geography, Marine Geology, Physical Science, or related fields. (candidates holding a Ph.D. in other disciplines but with knowledge and skills relevant to the Research Opportunity may be considered).

Applicants must meet the following
Qualifications:
Research Geologist Physical/Environmental Demands:
Work is usually performed in an office or laboratory setting. The work area:
Normally involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of offices or meeting and training rooms; or Involves exposure to a laboratory that involves risks and hazards that require safety precautions; or High risk of exposure or damage due to:
extreme weather conditions; working on ships and small boats; or working in remote inland locations. The USGS Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program provides highly motivated recent Ph.D. graduates with the opportunity to conduct concentrated research in association with selected USGS Scientists, as a final element to their formal career preparation. Selectees will utilize the excellent scientific resources available at the USGS in the conduct of scientific investigations and exploratory development associated with advanced scientific research. This program will provide selectees the opportunity to contribute to the overall research efforts of the USGS and in turn they will gain excellent professional research experience early in their careers. Appointments under the USGS Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program will be made under the Schedule A, 213.3102 (r) excepted appointing authority for a minimum period of 13 months and may be extended up to a maximum period of 4 years. In order to be considered for these opportunities, candidates must:
(1) have successfully completed a Ph.D. in a field related to the described Research Opportunity; the Ph.D. degree requirements must have been met no earlier than September 20, 2014 (5 years before the announcement opening date), and must be completed by the time employment starts;(2) meet the qualification requirements described in the Research Opportunity. The research proposal submitted must demonstrate that the applicant is equipped with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties for the specific Research Opportunity. Under Executive Order 11935, only United States citizens and nationals (residents of American Samoa and Swains Island) may compete for civil service jobs. A Federal agency is permitted to hire non-citizens only in very limited circumstances where there are no qualified citizens available for the position, AND the non-citizen meets the appropriation act and immigration laws. Read the information provided in the following link. If a non-citizen does not meet the appropriation act and immigration laws, then they cannot be considered for this Research Opportunity. Please contact person under Agency Contact Information for questions about eligibility and further assistance. https:
